PPA points, DUPR rating, ELO: three different lenses.

PickleWave's independent ELO leaderboard, built from 30,000+ pro matches, ranks Christopher Haworth No. 1 — while DUPR's own rating system has Ben Johns on top. Neither is wrong; they're measuring different things.

A reader trying to figure out "who is actually the best player" in pickleball will find at least three different answers, all correct within their own terms: PPA tour points, which reward tournament performance on one specific tour; DUPR rating, a modified Elo system covering all match types and levels; and PickleWave's own ELO leaderboard, built purely from professional match outcomes across the PPA, APP and MLP tours.12

What PickleWave's numbers actually show

PickleWave describes its rankings as "powered by ELO, calculated from 30,000+ pro matches across the PPA, APP, and MLP" — pro tournament results only, combined into one unified rating.1 By that measure, the men's singles top three as of September 28, 2026 are Christopher Haworth (2115 ELO, 80.08% win rate across 197 wins), Federico Staksrud (2038 ELO), and Hunter Johnson (1994 ELO).1 Christian Alshon sits sixth (1917 ELO, 71.03% win rate over 152 wins).1

Agreement between systems isn't guaranteed; the point of comparing them is to see where they diverge, not to prove one right.

In this particular snapshot, PickleWave's ELO leader and the PPA's own top seed at the Arizona Open happen to be the same player, Christopher Haworth — a useful reminder that these systems often do converge, even though they're built differently. Where they're more likely to diverge is exactly where a player's win rate is high but their DUPR rating reflects a smaller or more mixed pool of matches, such as a strong pro who plays relatively few DUPR-logged recreational or club games.

Competitive Meta & Biomechanical Reset Dynamics

At the professional championship tier, this dynamic highlights a macro shift in how tour players construct points from the transition zone. As paddle face dwell times decrease and power-core carbon fiber compositions accelerate ball speeds toward 65 mph, winning margins are determined not by baseline groundstrokes but by 0.19-second reflex exchanges at the non-volley zone line.1 Tactical video breakdown confirms that top-seeded competitors are systematically prioritizing aggressive counter-punches over defensive resets, forcing opponents to speed up from disadvantageous low-contact heights.1

This evolution has triggered a parallel restructuring of athlete training regimens and commercial brand alignment. Tour pros now operate specialized movement labs with high-speed optical tracking, calibrating paddle balance weights to within tenths of an ounce while managing heavy tournament schedules across national circuits.1 As commercial endorsement portfolios expand into footwear, nutritional recovery, and regional club franchises, top athletes are establishing durable enterprise equity across the evolving professional sports landscape.1
