"Mahjong is having its pickleball moment," says Laura Gainor, founder of both Pickleball in the Sun and its newer sibling brand, Mahjong in the Sun.¹ The pairing isn't a coincidence of naming — it's a deliberate bet that the same social pattern driving pickleball's growth applies directly to a very different game.

Where the idea actually came from

Gainor's pivot came from watching her own client base. "After helping brands and destinations tap into the pickleball boom, I started seeing those same signals emerging with mahjong, especially as a more relaxed, social complement to active experiences," she said.¹ Her framing of the two games together is explicit: "The idea became: pickleball in the morning, mahjong in the afternoon."¹

What the program actually runs

Mahjong in the Sun hosts a weekly Friday Club at Really Good Beer Stop in Nocatee, from 1 to 3 p.m., mixing seasoned players with beginners who watch before jumping in.¹ Gainor described plans to expand into resort and destination programming, corporate retreats and team-building, direct pickleball club integrations, and themed events like "Mahj Madness," alongside emerging charitable programming.¹
